Privacy policy

Abonten is an app for finding things to do and people to do them with. It's made by Techup Studio in Accra, Ghana. This policy says what we collect when you use Abonten, why, who else handles it, and what you can do about it. "We" means Techup Studio.
What we collect
- Your account: your email address, and a password if you sign up with email. If you sign in with Google or Apple, they give us your email address and, the first time, your name. Apple may give us a private relay address instead of your real one.
- Your profile: your name, photo or emoji, bio and interests.
- What you do in Abonten: events you organise, dates you join, your spots and check-ins, who you follow and the people you've met at events.
- Messages and photos: what you send in event chats and groups, and photos you add to events or your profile.
- Payments: the amount, what it was for, its status and the payment provider's reference. We don't receive your card details or mobile money PIN.
- If you organise paid events: the ID check you send us (the country, type and number of your ID, photos of its front and back, a selfie, your legal name and date of birth) and your mobile money payout number with the name it's registered to.
- Reports: reports you send about an event, a person or a message, and reports other people send about you.
- Technical details: our servers keep standard logs (your IP address, the time and what was asked for) to keep Abonten running and secure.
- Crash reports: if the app crashes, it sends a report of what went wrong, with your phone's model, operating system, app version and your Abonten user ID, so we can find and fix the problem.
When you allow it, the app uses your phone's location to show what's on near you. It's sent with that search and isn't stored. The places events happen at are stored, because organisers add them.
How we use it
- To run Abonten: your account, joining and paying, payouts to organisers, chats, check-in and notifications.
- To fix problems: crash reports and logs tell us what went wrong and on which phones.
- To keep people safe: checking organisers' IDs, looking into reports, and suspending accounts that break our terms.
- To email you: sign-in codes, receipts, and updates about events you're part of.
We don't sell your data, we don't show ads, and we don't use your data for advertising.
Who can see what
- Anyone using Abonten can see your name, photo, bio and interests.
- People going to the same event can see who else is going. The exact address of an event is shown only to people with a confirmed spot.
- Organisers see the people with spots on their events, so they can check them in.
- Organisers who've passed the ID check show a Verified badge with their first name and photo. Their full name and ID are seen only by our admins.
- Public events, with their organiser's name and photo, can be seen by anyone on the Abonten website.
Who handles it for us
- Techup Studio's own services for sign-in, storing photos, sending notifications and taking payments. They run on cloud servers, which may be outside Ghana.
- Google and Apple, if you sign in with them.
- Google Firebase, to deliver notifications to your phone and to collect crash reports (Firebase Crashlytics).
- Hubtel, to take payments, send refunds and pay organisers.
- An email delivery provider, to send our emails.
We share data with authorities only when the law requires it, or to protect someone from serious harm.
How long we keep it
We keep your data while your account is open. When you delete your account it's closed straight away, and your personal details are removed 30 days later. Your messages then show as from "Deleted user".
Records of payments, refunds and payouts, and our record of changes made in Abonten, are kept without your name, because we need them for accounting and for settling disputes. ID checks are kept while we need them for safety and to meet the law.
Your rights
Under Ghana's Data Protection Act, 2012, you can ask to see the data we hold about you, to correct it, or to delete it, and you can object to how we use it. Email us and we'll reply within 30 days. You can also complain to Ghana's Data Protection Commission.
You can delete your account in the app, under Profile, or on our website.
If you're outside Ghana
Abonten can be used from anywhere, and these rights apply to you wherever you live: you can see, correct, delete or take a copy of your data, and object to how we use it. Where your own country's law gives you more, you have that too.
If you're in the European Union or the United Kingdom, we use your data because we need it to provide the service you asked for (your account, joining, payments, chats), for our legitimate interest in keeping people safe and preventing fraud, to meet legal obligations, and with your consent for your location, which you can withdraw in your phone's settings. You can complain to your local data protection authority.
Your data may be processed in Ghana and in other countries where our providers run their servers. When it moves between countries, we use providers that protect it to the standard this policy describes.
Keeping it safe
Everything between the app and our servers is encrypted. ID checks are seen only by our admins. No system is perfectly secure, so if we learn of a breach that puts you at risk, we'll tell you and the Data Protection Commission.
Age
Abonten is for people 18 and over. If you think someone younger has an account, tell us and we'll close it.
Changes
When we change this policy we update the date at the top. If a change matters, we'll tell you in the app before it applies.
